Free Counter-Strike mod for Doom
Lambda-Strike Mod is a free-to-use utility from the Doom Mods Development Group. This total conversion mod shows players a crossover between the first-person shooter games Counter-Strike and Doom II. Play the game with custom character skins from both the terrorist and counter-terrorist groups as you shoot a mix of human and demon opponents across the original maps that add elements from both games.
Aside from being a fun mashup of two classic FPS games, Lambda-Strike Mod contains references to other games in both franchises. Apart from this mod, you can also check out Eternal Suffering or Mortal Kombat Doom.
Play Doom II as a different character
While the Doom franchise has been traditionally led by the heavily armored Doom Guy, the Lambda-Strike Mod lets you play as one of the characters from Counter-Strike 1.6. However, what started as a reskinning project has grown into a full-blown crossover mod. It now includes the real-world weapons used in CS. Even the HUD has been modified to reflect that of Valve’s classic FPS game.
All its Counter-Strike content is placed in the classic Doom II campaign, letting you revisit the original maps with the new interface. This results in a weird yet fun combination of two retro games. On the one hand, you have the flat pixelated enemies and textures from Doom. On the other hand, you see your character’s hands and the guns in a slightly higher resolution.
While it is fun, the mod remains incomplete. That is, the entire Doom II campaign is not yet available for your unique Counter-Strike experience. Aside from that, it features other nifty features. The status effect icons are also from CS, such as burn or poison. Also, one of the game’s secrets involves the Quad Damage, a powerup popularized by Quake, another action franchise.
A fun crossover
Overall, Lambda-Strike Mod feels like two different shooting games put on top of each other, but in a positive way. It perfectly recreates the first-person perspective, the weapons, and the HUD and lets you relive the demon-fighting action that Doom has become known for. With this much retro fun, you’d want the full campaign to be playable this way. Highly recommended.
